The first steps of repentance
Psalms 51:1-6
1. For what did David pray?
Have mercy on me, O God,
according to your unfailing love;
according to your great compassion
blot out my transgressions.
Wash away all my iniquity
and cleanse me from my sin.
For I know my transgressions,
and my sin is always before me.
Against you, you only, have I sinned
and done what is evil in your sight,
so that you are proved right when you speak
and justified when you judge.
Surely I was sinful at birth,
sinful from the time my mother conceived me.
Surely you desire truth in the inner parts;
you teach me wisdom in the inmost place.
Lamentations 3:22-26, 40-42; 2 Peter 3:8-9
2. What words were to be used in the lament over sin?
We need to examine ourselves for sins, for we have sinned and rebelled against God. Because of the LORD's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail.
The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.
